The Buffalo Bills came up short yet again this season, demonstrating that they may need to make some tweaks to their roster to finally get over the hump in 2024.
One area in which the Bills may need some help this offseason is at wide receiver, as they may be losing Gabe Davis to free agency, and Stefon Diggs had an oddly subpar second half.
Well, Pro Football Focus sees Buffalo as one of the top potential landing spots for Indianapolis Colts star Michael Pittman Jr., who is set to hit the open market this March.
Pittman is coming off of a spectacular season in which he played 16 games and hauled in 109 receptions for 1,152 yards and four touchdowns.
While the idea of Pittman alongside of Diggs on the Bills certainly sounds tantalizing, it does seem a bit unrealistic for a couple of reasons.
First of all, the Colts would have to let Pittman walk first. Indianapolis has tons of cap room, so it can easily afford to pay Pittman what he wants. Plus, even if the two sides cannot come reach a long-term agreement, Indy can always just slap a franchise tag on the wide out.
Second, Buffalo has a miserable cap situation.
According to Spotrac, the Bills are heading into the offseason $51 million over the cap. They may not even have enough room to re-sign some of their own key free agents; let alone pursue a top receiver like Pittman.
Of course, Buffalo can always move some money around by cutting players and restructuring contracts, but even then, the Bills probably won’t have many financial resources at their disposal this spring.
Buffalo went 11-6 this season, winning its fourth straight AFC East division title. However, it ultimately lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs, representing the third time the Bills have been eliminated by the Chiefs in the last four years.
While adding a talent like Pittman would undoubtedly go a long way in helping Buffalo reach the next level, it seems like an unattainable goal at this point.
