Bills’ Sean McDermott Doesn’t Hold Back On Current Roster

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott does not seem deterred by the fact that his team has consistently been unable to get over the hump in the playoffs.

The Bills have made the playoffs five years in a row, and all five years, they have failed to make it to the Super Bowl. They have also made it to the AFC Championship Game just once during that span.

This past Sunday, Buffalo fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round, marking the third time the Bills have been eliminated by the Chiefs in the last five postseasons.

As a result of Buffalo’s playoff struggles, some are advocating for the club to make some major changes this offseason, but McDermott thinks the nucleus is just fine moving forward.

“This is not a situation where you strip it down to the studs,” McDermott said, via Adam Gorski of WIVB. “You really start with understanding the success that we’ve had and how we’ve gotten it. Then you make tweaks along the way to try and get ourselves to become world champions. … We have not reached that ultimate goal however in terms of why we came here, and we will work tirelessly to do that.”

McDermott added that while the team is disappointed, it is not “broken” by its latest postseason failure.

The Bills were 6-6 at one point this season, but won their last five regular-season games to clinch an improbable AFC East division title. They then proceeded to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs before falling to the Chiefs.

McDermott has gone 78-47 (including playoffs) since taking over as head coach of Buffalo back in 2017. He has led the team to four straight AFC East crowns.

General manager Brandon Beane made similar comments to Sean McDermott, saying that the team intends to go ahead with its current core of players.

Of course, given the Bills’ tenuous salary cap situation, it will be difficult for the team to add some significant pieces this offseason.
