As the Green Bay Packers continue through the 2023 NFL offseason, arguably the biggest story in the entire league is when the franchise will trade Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. That has become a forgone conclusion, with Jordan Love taking over the reigns as the starting quarterback in Green Bay. Now, there are questions about who the backup quarterback will be, and buzz is beginning to grow that Matt Ryan could be an option.
Ryan is coming off of a rough all-around season with the Indianapolis Colts. Quite frankly, he looked old and the Colts struggled in every facet of their offensive game plan. Despite the rough year, Ryan could make sense for the Packers.
Wendell Ferreira of Cheesehead TV mentioned that Ryan could be an ideal free agency fit for the Packers at the quarterback position.
Bringing in a veteran quarterback behind Love would be a wise decision for the Packers. Obviously, the chance that Ryan would play would be slim. However, in case of an injury, signing Ryan would be a good move and he could also provide mentoring from the sidelines.
During the 2022 season with the Colts, Ryan ended up playing in 12 games. He completed 67 percent of his pass attempts for 3,057 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Unfortunately, Ryan also fumbled the football four times.
Part of the issue for the Colts was their lack of quality play on the offensive line. Ryan was constantly seeing pressure. As a 37-year-old quarterback with limited mobility, that is never a recipe for success.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what the Packers end up doing at the quarterback situation behind Love. Matt Ryan would make a ton of sense, but so would a name like Carson Wentz. Both players have now been thrown in as a possible target for the Packers late in free agency, but what they do next remains to be seen.
