Cam Newton went through a whirlwind of an offseason. At one point, it looked like the Carolina Panthers were going to bring him back for at least one more year. When everything was said and done, Newton was released and ended up signing a one-year deal with the New England Patriots.
To say that the offseason gave Newton some extra fuel would be an understatement. He is angry and that will propel him forward in 2020.
Granted, there are some major concerns about Newton. The Panthers felt like they couldn’t risk gambling another season on him. However, he was the longtime face of their franchise and cutting him loose the way he did left a bad taste in Newton’s mouth.
With the Patriots, Newton is getting a fresh start. He is getting that fresh start with one of the best head coaches of all-time in Bill Belichick. Josh McDaniels is a highly respected offensive coordinator as well.
This is exactly what both Newton and the Patriots needed. His extra motivation from being cut is exactly what New England needs at this point in time.
Tom Brady left town to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency. That leaves the Patriots in a strange situation that they haven’t faced in a long time. Uncertainty is never a great place to be, but Newton offers some stability.
Just a few short years ago, Newton was one of the most feared quarterbacks in the NFL. He was an MVP candidate heading into almost every season. Injuries have derailed his career a bit, but this offseason has opened up a new version of Newton.
Anger and motivation can drive a player to be their best. Newton is looking healthy and is taking things more seriously than ever before. He is on a warpath to prove that the Panthers made a major mistake.
If the Patriots want to compete, they need the best version of Cam Newton they can possibly get. They need him to want to win more than he ever has in his career. That is exactly the version of Newton they are getting.
Even though there is a chance that Newton could get re-injured, there is also a chance that he could get back to being a massive threat. He can still run, he has a strong arm, and he has a solid supporting cast in a proven offensive system.
Now, it is simply up to Newton to prove that he can still be a franchise quarterback. That he can still lead a team on a deep run in the playoffs.
New England has offered him that opportunity. Newton will make the Patriots very happy that they did.
