Cameron Sutton Named Best Fit For Ravens In NFL Free Agency

Any talks about the Baltimore Ravens thus far this offseason have revolved around quarterback Lamar Jackson. What is unfolding with the former MVP reeks of collusion between owners, working together to suppress his value on the open market.

Eventually, something will have to give there. Either the Ravens will strike a deal with him or another team will step up to the plate and sign him to the kind of offer sheet he deserves. Depending on what occurs there will determine the route that Baltimore takes the rest of the offseason.

Assuming that they retain him, there really aren’t too many holes on this roster. The Ravens could certainly use some more weaponry at the wide receiver position to bolster the passing offense. Rashod Bateman remaining healthy would certainly be a boost.

Defensively is where the biggest need for the Ravens could lie. Their cornerback depth could be decimated in free agency with Marcus Peters and Kyle Fuller both hitting free agency. This offseason could see the reshaping of the secondary.

Safety Chuck Clark has already been traded to the New York Jets in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, insinuating that Kyle Hamilton is ready to take on a larger role. That would make someone such as Cameron Sutton the perfect match for Baltimore in free agency this year.

In 2022, Sutton put together the best season of his career. He ranked third in the NFL in coverage success rate according to Sports Info Solutions charging. Should Peters and Fuller move on, Sutton can slide right into a starting spot opposite of Marlon Humphrey while also rotating in at the slot with Hamilton.

Sutton has spent the first six seasons of his career with the rival Pittsburgh Steelers. A lot of the schemes and game plans that they use defensively in their secondary is similar to how the Ravens deploy their defensive backfield.

From that standpoint, the transition to Baltimore would be an easy one as Sutton offers versatility as someone who can play on the perimeter and in the slot.
