Can Wentz and Colts combine for a Super Bowl run?

The Indianapolis Colts made the significant move to trade for quarterback Carson Wentz
from the Philadelphia Eagles. After a series of underwhelming performances, Wentz found
himself benched by former Eagles coach Doug Pederson towards the end of the 2020 season.

It was a fall from grace for the 28-year-old, who had been an MVP contender in the 2017
campaign before a serious knee injury curtailed his season. Nick Foles assumed the starting
duties and guided Philadelphia to their first Super Bowl win as they managed to beat the New
England Patriots in a legendary shootout. After Wentz regained fitness he was unable to
conjure the same magic and suffered further injuries to stunt his development.

The situation came to a climax towards the end of the 2020 term when he was benched in
favor of Jalen Hurts. It was evident that Wentz did no longer wish to be a part of the Eagles’
organization. The Colts among other franchises were circling in a bid to secure a trade deal
for the quarterback after the retirement of Philip Rivers.

Due to Frank Reich’s experience coaching Wentz at the Eagles, the Colts struck an
agreement with Philadelphia to acquire the quarterback for a third-round pick in the 2021
NFL Draft and a conditional 2022 NFL Draft second-round pick. The latter pick could rise to
a first-rounder based on Wentz’s performances. Indianapolis will be hopeful that Reich can
bring out the best in the 28-year-old as he did when offensive coordinator of the Eagles
during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Hope In Indianapolis?

Indianapolis were beaten in the Wildcard Round of the post-season in 2020 by the Buffalo
Bills, just failing in the decisive moments of the game. However, Reich has a quality roster at
his disposal and the addition of Wentz could push the Colts into contenders in the AFC and
for the Super Bowl. It’s well worth browsing the leading bookmakers on SBO’s list of the
best available
in the United States. The Colts have a well-rounded team, and although they
lack the star power of the Kansas City Chiefs, they could be capable of becoming the team to
beat in the conference. Their odds will provide value and if you shop around with the top
sportsbooks on the market, there will be good prices to be found, as well as sign-up and
deposit bonuses to bolster your potential winnings. As a slight outsider, the Colts would be an
intriguing option to take when wagering on the NFL.

At the peak of his powers, Wentz was a difference-maker, guiding the Eagles out of
mediocrity into one of the best teams in the NFL. He threw 33 touchdowns to only seven
interceptions in 13 games in the 2017 season before he was ruled out of the campaign. The
Colts will be striving to help him reach that level again. Wentz’s issues in Philadelphia over
the last three years have stemmed from a lack of talent on the offensive line along with his
receiving corps. The Eagles’ line endured a spate of injuries, leaving Wentz exposed behind center. When the quarterback did throw the ball downfield, he was left wondering whether even his precise passes would be caught.

What Will Wentz Be Working With?

The 28-year-old should not experience these issues with the Colts. Quenton Nelson is one of
the most dominant guards in the league, while the rest of the offensive line is stout, featuring
Ryan Kelly and Braden Smith. Their running game is also excellent with Jonathan Taylor
enjoying an outstanding rookie term as he rushed for over 1,000 yards with 11 touchdowns.
Nyheim Hines is a quality passing back, which will ease the pressure on Wentz as he looks
for quick offloads.

The receiving corps might be a work in progress, although Michael Pittman Jr was
impressive in his rookie season. Paris Campbell has endured an injury-hit start to his career in
the NFL, but his talent is exceptional. Indianapolis have room to work in free agency,
although veteran wideout TY Hilton is unlikely to return. However, there are more than
enough quality receivers out there to plug into the offense and fire from day one. Wentz has
the ability and the comfortability factor with Reich along with a secure offense.

The sky could be the limit for him in the 2021 campaign, which could result in a Super Bowl
run for a talented Colts team.
