Cam Newton, Quarterback
Cam Newton played poorly through three quarters, completing just 9 of 17 passes for 68 yards. Consequently, the Panthers were held scoreless through three quarters for the first time since they selected Newton with the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
But Newton was phenomenal in the fourth quarter, completing 16 of 22 passes for 201 yards and two TDs. He added a team-high 49 yards on seven carries on the day to finish with 318 total yards and put together another overall strong performance.
The eighth-year quarterback’s most impressive throw was the one he made to Torrey Smith on fourth-and-10 from the Carolina 31 on what turned out to be the game-winning drive. Facing heavy pressure, Newton made a leaping throw that was on point. Smith ultimately gained 34 yards on the play, and six plays later the Panthers were celebrating in the end zone.
Newton takes a lot of flack, even from Panthers fans. But the Carolina offense goes as he goes, and the Panthers would have lost on Sunday without him.
