Carolina Panthers: 3 Keys to Victory in Week 5 vs. Giants

More Great Decision-Making from Cam Newton

The truth of the matter is that Cam Newton has often had to carry the Panthers to victories over the past eight years. But that shouldn’t be needed against the Giants.

On Sunday, Newton simply needs to continue managing the game the way he has over the first four weeks of the season. He hasn’t put up gaudy numbers, but his only interception wasn’t his fault and he has done a solid job of going through his progressions and checking the ball down when the deep pass isn’t available.

The work Newton has put in with offensive coordinator Norv Turner has certainly paid off in the early going, but Carolina’s franchise quarterback must continue to play smart moving forward. The big statistical performances will come eventually, but he likely won’t need to do anything superhuman in order to beat the Giants.

This is a game where the Panthers must establish the run and Newton just needs to play it cool. His completion percentage currently sits at 67.4, which is almost nine points higher than his career percentage of 58.7. Meanwhile, his passer rating of 99.7 is 14 points higher than his career mark of 85.7.

More of the same steady, smart play will equal another Carolina victory.
