Cam Newton is Thriving Under Norv Turner
Cam Newton has been the engine that makes the Panthers’ offense go ever since he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2011. But one of the NFL’s brightest young stars just seems to keep getting better and better.
After down years in 2016 and 2017, the league’s 2015 Most Valuable Player seems to be back to his MVP form under new offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Newton completed 15 of 24 passes on Sunday and through three weeks is completing a career-high 67.4 percent of his passes.
Newton also has just one interception through three games, and that pick was due to a drop by C.J. Anderson in Week 2. So he’s protecting the ball much better than he did during the previous two seasons.
As a matter of fact, the one fumble that he’s had this year came on Sunday as well. And Newton himself fought his way to the bottom of the pile to recover the fumble and retain the football. So he hasn’t been hurting his team with costly mistakes, which is a huge plus for any quarterback.
Through three weeks, Newton is playing at a higher level than he has since 2015. And even with all of his struggles over the past two seasons, that’s certainly saying something for one of the NFL’s most talented players.
