Carolina Panthers: 5 Bold Predictions for the 2018 NFL Season

Cam Newton Will Record 35 Total Touchdowns

In his seven-year NFL career, Cam Newton has reached the 35-touchdown mark just twice. He finished with 21 passing TDs and 14 rushing TDs in his 2011 rookie season and 35 passing TDs and 10 rushing TDs in his 2015 Most Valuable Player season. Conversely, in his other five seasons, Newton has averaged 26.4 TDs.

This year, Newton will again reach the 35-TD plateau in a year that will rival his MVP season. His completion percentage is expected to rise under the tutelage of Norv Turner, which should give him more red-zone opportunities. As a result, his amount of scores both through the air and on the ground will see a jump.

Obviously, Newton is a different breed of NFL quarterback. Most of the league’s premier signal callers are primarily pocket passers (i.e., Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees), but he is just as good if not better with his legs.

Turner has never worked with a quarterback like Newton. However, with Turner’s offensive mind and Newton’s physical traits and abilities, expect Carolina to have a lethal offense in 2018.

The primary beneficiary of such an offense will be Newton, who will re-establish himself as an elite quarterback this season. As I said, he may not approach his MVP numbers, but he will have at least the second-best season of his NFL career in 2018.
