The Miami Dolphins have long been searching for a long-term solution for the quarterback position. The 2020 NFL Draft has a variety of different options including Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert.
Josh Edwards of CBS Sports predicts the Dolphins will use the No. 5 pick in the NFL Draft to select Herbert. The main reason for this projection was that it’s a reaction to Tua Tagovailoa going No. 2 overall to the Washington Redskins.
Miami was forced to react to Washington’s decision to take Tagovailoa. The Dolphins select a player they deem to be the next best: Herbert.
After a strong outing at the NFL Scouting Combine, Herbert has improved his draft stock along with Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. The Dolphins will have a strong probability of having the option of either Herbert, Love, or even passing on both.
The Dolphins have tried various options at the quarterback spot since they decided to move on from Ryan Tannehill. Between trading for Josh Rosen from the Arizona Cardinals and benching him for veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, it’s clear they need something better.
Justin Herbert is considered as being better prepared to step in from day one and make an impact than Jordan Love. If the Dolphins want more certainty with their next quarterback selection, Herbert seems to be the better selection.
It will be important that the Dolphins bolster the rest of their team around whoever they bring in as their next attempt for a franchise quarterback. Placing too great of a burden on prospects and giving up quickly on them isn’t going to lead to a favorable success rate.
