CBS Sports projects Patriots to trade up for QB of the future

The New England Patriots have had a rough offseason with the departure of Tom Brady being the main part of it. Bill Belichick and company are now focused on picking up the pieces and finding a way to remain competitive in the AFC East without their longtime superstar quarterback.

At this point in time, the Patriots are projected to start Jarrett Stidham at quarterback. He was drafted with the No. 133 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. However, there are other options available for New England as well.

One of them could be to sign a guy like Cam Newton. Belichick would be given a former MVP with a chip on his shoulder to prove himself once again. If Newton could get back to 100 percent health, that would be a huge move for the Patriots.

Another potential option could be turning to the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. There are a few quarterbacks that the Patriots could snag to be their new long-term franchise signal caller.

CBS Sports has the Patriots making an aggressive move to trade up for Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert. They had Herbert sliding to No. 19 and the Patriots making the move up to get him.

With Justin Herbert still on the board, the Patriots decide to pull the trigger and make a move up to grab their quarterback of the future. To move up four spots, the Patriots send their highest third-round pick (87th overall) and a sixth-round pick (195th overall) to the Raiders. The Patriots make the move here because they wanted to jump Jacksonville, a team that could also be in the market for a quarterback.

Herbert would be a huge addition for the Patriots. Not only would he be their potential franchise quarterback for years to come, he could also step in and play immediately. His IQ and arm talent make him a quarterback capable of playing early.

Last season with the Ducks, Herbert completed 66.8 percent of his pass attempts for 3,471 yards, 32 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. He also scored four touchdowns on the ground.

Standing in at 6-foot-6 and nearly 240 pounds, Herbert is the ideal size for an NFL quarterback. He has a top-notch work ethic and wants to be coached. That fits perfectly for the Patriots.

Being able to come into the NFL and work with guys like Belichick and Josh McDaniels would be a major positive for Herbert. He may not be hyped up as much as Joe Burrow or Tua Tagovailoa, but he certainly has the potential to be just as good of a long-term quarterback as those guys.

Expect to see the Patriots strongly consider making a big move to acquire a new quarterback. They could roll with Stidham, but Belichick won’t shy away from making a move if he sees one available.
