No. 1: Trevor Williams, Cornerback
One of the biggest plays of the game came with the Chargers clinging to a 23-17 lead in the third quarter. On 1st-and-goal from inside the red zone, 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard threw a pass that was intercepted by Los Angeles’ third-year cornerback Trevor Williams and returned 86 yards to the San Francisco 12-yard line.
The Chargers ultimately had to settle for a field goal, but it was still a 10-point swing that played a major factor in the outcome. Los Angeles still had to overcome a deficit in the final quarter, but Williams’ near pick-6 was instrumental in the win.
In addition to the interception, Williams also recorded eight tackles (seven solo) to rank second on the team. Defensive end Isaac Rochell also had a pick for the Chargers, who came in with just three interceptions over the first three weeks of the season.
The Chargers tied for sixth in the league in interceptions a year ago, coming down with 18 of them. If their secondary can approach that number again, it will provide a great complement to an offense that is capable of putting up a lot of points.
