No. 3: Philip Rivers, Quarterback
Philip Rivers didn’t exactly have the greatest outing of his career on Sunday, but he did bounce back from an early pick-6 to post a decent performance. The veteran quarterback completed 25-of-39 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns against the 49ers, recording a scoring strike in each of the first three quarters.
Rivers also completed passes to eight different receivers on Sunday, with wide receiver Keenan Allen serving as his top target with seven catches for 63 yards. And in addition to Melvin Gordon’s 55 yards on seven catches, Tyrell Williams, Austin Ekeler, Antonio Gates and Virgil Green also caught multiple passes for Los Angeles.
Rivers often gets overlooked when people talk about the game’s elite passers, probably because of his lack of postseason success. But he has been one of the most steady quarterbacks in the game during his career.
In his 15-year career, Rivers has completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 51,504 yards and 353 TDs against 168 interceptions. And this year, he’s off to a dazzling start, completing 68 percent of his passes for 1,156 yards and 11 TDs against two picks.
Gordon is an important aspect of the Chargers’ offense for sure, but so is the veteran, Rivers, who has an active streak of 205 consecutive starts that ranks fourth all time.
So not only is he a steady passer, but he’s also a durable one.
