3 reasons Chargers S Derwin James could be a DPOY candidate in 2020

Let’s not sugarcoat this, the Los Angeles Chargers were a disappointment last season. They came into last season with very high expectations and many thought they could contend for a Super Bowl.

With a talented defense, a high powered offense, and a coach who led them to a highly successful season the previous year, the Chargers simply should have been better. However, a slew of injuries, a major contract dispute, and an inability to take care of the football led to a 5-11 record.

The player many had placed their attention on was safety Derwin James after his highly impressive rookie campaign. He was ready to make the leap towards being a premier elite safety in the NFL. Unfortunately, due to an injury, he was limited to playing in only five games.

While Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram are the most praised players on the Chargers’ defense, James has enough talent to be the face of that unit. In fact, he could challenge not only the league’s best safety but also the title of being the league’s best defensive player.

With that being said, here are three reasons why Derwin James could be headed for a breakout season.
