Chargers’ Justin Herbert Passes Peyton Manning In This Big Stat

The Los Angeles Chargers passing game led by Justin Herbert hasn’t been nearly as explosive this season as it was the first two seasons that he was under center. While he is leading the league in completions, he is putting up the lowest touchdown percentage and yards per game in his career.

But, his season isn’t without positives. His interception percentage and sack percentage this season are both currently the lowest of his career. When taking into consideration some of the circumstances surrounding Herbert, his production not bottoming out is actually quite impressive.

Los Angeles has dealt with injuries to the wide receiver position as Keenan Allen and Mike Williams have both missed extended time. Allen injured his hamstring in Week 1 and wasn’t able to make it through a full game until Week 11, as he has made only four appearances.

Williams has made eight but is currently sidelined as he re-aggravated his ankle injury in Week 11 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Without them in the lineup, Herbert has had to rely on Joshua Palmer, who is having a career season, DeAndre Carter, tight end Gerald Everett and running back Austin Ekeler in the passing game.

There has been no running game to speak of, either, which has put a lot of pressure on Herbert to lead this offense with his arm. That was even tougher when considering that he was dealing with an injury earlier in the season. Teams are keying in on stopping the pass yet Herbert is finding a way to help his team as much as possible.

In the process, he is also moving toward making history. During last week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, Herbert surpassed Peyton Manning for the second most passing yards in the first three seasons of their career.

Herbert is up to 12,354 yards and counting as the Chargers have six games remaining in the season. In his sights next is Andrew Luck in the No. 1 spot, who had 12,957 yards in the first three seasons of his career.

As long as he doesn’t miss any time, that number is an attainable one for Herbert. Despite the down season, by his standards, Herbert is still averaging 273.1 yards per game. Based on that pace, he should be able to break the record early in the game against the Tennessee Titans in Week 15.

But, it would not be surprising if he moves into first place in Week 14. The Chargers are going to be playing on Sunday Night Football that weekend against the Miami Dolphins in what could be a high-scoring affair, pitting Justin Herbert against his 2020 draft mate, Tua Tagovailoa.
