5. Solid receiving options for Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky is in his second season as a quarterback in the NFL, and he is benefiting from having an improved group of receivers to throw to. During the offseason, the franchise prioritized reloading the position, and so far, that investment is paying significant dividends.
Last season, Kendall Wright and Josh Bellamy led the Bears in receiving yards with 614 and 376 yards respectively. That kind of production was not going to cut it if the Bears wanted to compete in 2018.
With a good cap situation, Chicago brought in Taylor Gabriel, Allen Robinson, and Anthony Miller to revamp the receiving group. They also signed Trey Burton, the former backup tight end of the Philadelphia Eagles, to replace the injured Zach Miller. Just on paper, that group was much better than the 2017 unit that was wildly disappointing.
Following their Week 10 demolition of the Lions, Gabriel leads the team with 426 yards and two touchdowns. Robinson and Miller have 418 and 332 yards respectively, with eight touchdowns between them as well. Burton has been great as well with 411 yards and five touchdowns.
The impact this group has had on the team is immeasurable. It is so much easier for a young quarterback to succeed when he has talented wide receivers to throw to. Trubisky now has that with this revamped unit, and he is reaping the benefits. This receivers group is talented and in all honesty, hasn’t realized its full potential yet due to an injury to Allen Robinson.
Having a group of reliable pass-catchers will be vital in the playoffs, and could be the difference in a potential Super Bowl.
