Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has been liking what he is seeing from quarterback Justin Fields.

Following the Bears’ Week 16 win over the Arizona Cardinals, Eberflus commented on Fields’ performance, saying he thinks that Fields has been showing growth.

“I see it as progress,” Eberflus said, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “When you’re the winning quarterback on the winning team, that’s always good, right? He’s been part of that; the last three out of four wins have been coming out of the two-minute, and he’s been part of that. I certainly do see progress.”

Fields went 15-for-27 with 170 yards, a touchdown and an interception while carrying the ball nine times for 97 yards and a score in the 27-16 victory.

Eberflus added that Fields had “some really dynamic scrambles and runs” and that he also “looked down the field a lot of times and made some passes.”

Fields has a couple of more weeks to prove that he can be Chicago’s franchise quarterback. The Bears will likely own the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft courtesy of the Carolina Panthers, and the general consensus is that Chicago will use the selection to take a signal-caller like USC’s Caleb Williams or North Carolina’s Drake Maye. The Bears would then, in turn, trade Fields.

The question is, has Fields shown enough this season to warrant serious consideration to be Chicago’s quarterback moving forward?

On the 2023 campaign overall, Fields has thrown for 2,146 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 60.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 84.5. He has also rushed for 585 yards and three scores while averaging 5.6 yards per carry.

The 24-year-old missed four games in the middle of the season due to a thumb injury. Prior to the injury, Fields was showing signs of breaking out, totaling eight touchdowns and just one pick in Weeks 4 and 5.

If the Bears do decide to trade Fields, there will almost surely be multiple teams that will express interest in the Ohio State product.

Chicago is now 6-9 on the year. The Bears will take on the Atlanta Falcons next week before wrapping up the regular season by facing the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
