The Chicago Bears are expected to trade quarterback Justin Fields this offseason, but they may not receive the type of return package they are hoping for.
Dan Wiederer of The Chicago Tribune threw a bit of a wet blanket on Fields’ trade value during an appearance on the Go Long podcast this week, saying that his market isn’t very “robust.”
“That’s hard for a lot of people to understand because they’ve seen the Justin Fields highlight reel, they see the plays he’s capable of making, and they go, ‘Well, somebody’s going to want this guy,'” Wiederer said.
Of course, teams are looking much deeper than just YouTube highlight reels, and if you look at Fields’ total body of work, it isn’t very impressive as a whole.
Fields certainly showed flashes this past season, making 13 starts and throwing for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 657 yards and four scores.
However, Wiederer notes that the primary clubs interested in Fields—the Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders—all have other options.
If the Bears are asking for an arm and a leg in return for Fields, any of those teams can simply look to sign a veteran free agent—such as Russell Wilson or Kirk Cousins—or look toward the NFL Draft.
Chicago owns the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, and the general consensus is that it will take USC quarterback Caleb Williams and move Fields, ending Fields’ three-year tenure in the Windy City.
The Bears originally took Fields with the 11th overall pick back in 2021, but the 24-year-old has been underwhelming overall, going just 10-28 as a starter with 40 passing touchdowns and 30 picks.
We’ll see what becomes of Justin Fields in the coming weeks.
