Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville Jaguars
The Chiefs were in need of running back support for Damien Williams before the NFL draft and selected Clyde Edwards-Helaire out of LSU. But now with Damien Williams opting out of the 2020 season, the need for running back help is present again for the Chiefs.
Leonard Fournette and a trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars have gone hand-in-hand like football and Thanksgiving. Fournette hasn’t been what the Jaguars expected of him, but he did finish seventh in the NFL in rushing yards (1,152) last season.
The concern with Fournette has been injuries, dating back to his college days at LSU. And even when he stayed healthy last season, he struggled to find the end zone, ending the season with just three touchdowns.
The Chiefs have options in the backfield. Along with Edwards-Helaire are Darrel Williams, Darwin Thompson, DeAndre Washington and Elijah McGuire. The problem is that none are No. 1 running backs. The Chiefs are going to rely on Edwards-Helaire, but if he isn’t the answer, the rest are wild cards.
Fournette has his problems, but it could be a high-risk, high-reward situation for Kansas City. It all depends on how much trust the organization has in Edwards-Helaire and Co. to fill the hole Williams leaves them in.
