Kansas City Chiefs: 3 Takeaways from Week 1 Win vs. Chargers

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Defense leaving a lot to be desired

Coming into the season nobody truly expected the Chiefs defense to be good, but boy it cannot be this bad moving forward. The victory aside, the Chiefs secondary was atrocious. As it stands, trading cornerback Marcus Peters this offseason is looking like a colossal mistake. Ron Parker came up with a clutch interception in the red zone, but aside from that, the secondary was exposed.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers threw for 424 yards and three touchdowns, although a chunk of that yardage came in garbage time. That is not a recipe for success, it just so happened that Patrick Mahomes was able to out duel the Chargers signal-caller.

Dee Ford was able to hit home with a sack, but he was the only one to bring Rivers down. However, aside from Ford, nobody in the Chiefs front seven was able to put much pressure on Rivers.

If the Chiefs have their eyes set on the playoffs, they are going to need to make some adjustments on defense. Allowing more than 500 yards is not sustainable, something needs to change. It is not safe to simply bet on being able to out score opponents every week.
