Not only could an argument be made that Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL, but a strong one could be presented that he is the best player, period. The Kansas City Chiefs star has been truly dominant since taking over as their starter in 2018.

In five short seasons, Patrick Mahomes has accomplished more than most players will do in their entire career. If he retired today, there is a strong chance that he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame despite being in the NFL for only six seasons and being the starter for five of them.

Alas, the accolades speak for themselves. He has two regular season MVPs and has won two Super Bowls, winning the MVP in both of those victories. Patrick Mahomes has also been named to the Pro Bowl team every season that he has been a starter for.

If he keeps up this pace, there are a lot of records in the NFL history books that are going to be rewritten by him. Patrick Mahomes has rapidly made his way up the Chiefs’ record books and could find himself making history in 2023.

In 80 games, Patrick Mahomes has thrown for 24,241 yards. That is enough for second place on the all-time Chiefs list. The only player ahead of him is Len Dawson, who threw for 28,507. That means should the Texas Tech product throw for 4,277 yards this upcoming season, he will take over the No. 1 spot.

It would seem to be a safe bet that Patrick Mahomes accomplishes that feat. He has gone over that number in four out of the five seasons he has been the starter. The only time that he missed was in 2019 when he played in only 14 games.

Should Patrick Mahomes remain healthy in 2023, Dawson’s record is all but broken. If he puts together another MVP-caliber season, the touchdown record that Dawson holds could be in jeopardy as well.

Dawson threw 237 touchdowns in his illustrious Chiefs career. Patrick Mahomes currently has 192, so if he throws 46 passing touchdowns, he will take over the No. 1 spot there as well. That is a number he has reached only once in his career, so Dawson’s name could sit atop that list until the 2024 season.
