The Kansas City Chiefs played another hard-fought game on Sunday Night Football in Week 13 against the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay entered the game with a lot of positive momentum and they were able to keep it going, picking up a 27-19 victory over the visiting Chiefs.

That loss dropped Kansas City’s record to 8-4 on the season. All of a sudden, their lead in the AFC West is only two games over the Denver Broncos and they have their work cut out for them if they want to earn the No. 1 seed in the conference for the postseason.

There are certainly a few issues that need ironing out on the Chiefs. Their defense found no answers in slowing down the Packers’ passing game led by Jordan Love, who outplayed Patrick Mahomes in a game he has had circled on his calendar for a long time.

Love completed 25-of-36 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns while Mahomes went 21-of-33 for 210 yards, one touchdown and one interception. After the game, Mahomes spoke about where the team is at, offering a blunt response to the loss.

“We’re not where we want to be at, but I think we’re close,” said Mahomes. “We’re playing a lot of good football teams really well. Winning some of those games and losing some of those games and so we’re kind of in the go zone now where we have to try to get it going through the stretch. All we can do is learn from this game and be focused on another challenge this next week coming to Arrowhead.”

That challenge Mahomes is referencing is the Buffalo Bills. At 6-6, they will be heading into Arrowhead Stadium as a desperate team, looking to pull off a win following some brutal losses prior to their Week 13 bye.

However, the Kansas City schedule does open up from this point on. The Bills are the toughest opponent they have remaining as the only team with a .500 record. The New England Patriots, Las Vegas Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Chargers are all on the outside looking in of the playoff picture in the AFC with records under the .500 mark.

That last month of the season will provide the Chiefs with a chance to figure some things out and build some positive momentum heading into the playoffs. They certainly need it as Kansas City can no longer rely on their offense just creating magic to bail them out of tough spots as the strength of this year’s team is their defense.
