The combination of head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been able to overcome plenty of issues for the Kansas City Chiefs over the last few years. However, for the first time, they may have met their match.
They were able to overcome trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins last offseason and still win a Super Bowl. Offensive line woes have been an issue in the past. But, their magic hasn’t bene working in recent weeks.
Anyone who watched the game on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles, or has been following the Chiefs throughout the season, knows their passing game is lacking weapons. Tight end Travis Kelce has looked human this season and he is getting virtually zero help from wide receivers on the depth chart.
Outside of rookie Rashee Rice, every other wide receiver on the roster is underachieving. Marquez Valdes-Scantling is the talk of social media for the wrong reason as he dropped what could have been the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney, second and first-round picks in recent drafts, haven’t come close to living up to expectations.
Last night, it was Justin Watson who ran the most routes for the team. Wide receiver is a major issue for the Chiefs and has played a big part in Mahomes setting an ugly NFL record against the Eagles on Monday Night Football.
Week 11 marked the third straight game that Kansas City has failed to score a point in the second half. According to OptaSTATS on X, formerly known as Twitter, this is the first time in NFL history that a multi-time MVP has seen his team go scoreless in the second half of three consecutive games played.
The Chiefs were able to defeat the Dolphins in Germany in Week 9, but lost to the Denver Broncos in Week 8 and last night to the Eagles. Someone has to step up offensively to make the most of Mahomes’ heroics as he is being let down on a constant basis by his pass catchers.
Sooner than later, those shortcomings are going to catch up to them. If they are not careful, they will begin to slide down the AFC standings as they are going to be in a dogfight for home-field advantage in the postseason.
