Athletes, especially pro athletes, are some of the most superstitious people in the world, and they have a wide range of rituals they engage in, especially leading up to and during games. Many of these rituals seem innocuous enough, but there are some that many outside of the sports world may consider strange. Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs is considered by most to be the best quarterback in the NFL, and perhaps he feels his own lucky superstition has played a role in his success.

He was a guest on “Manningcast” during “Monday Night Football” this week as the Denver Broncos outlasted the Buffalo Bills, 24-22.

He admitted to Peyton Manning and Eli Manning that he has worn the same pair of underwear for every game since entering the league.

“First, my wife Brittany got them for me, so I have to wear them,” said Mahomes. “At the same time, I threw ’em on that first season, we had a pretty good season that season– I only wear them for gameday, though, so they’re not too worn down. I clean them. I wash them every once in a while, at least.”

“If we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash them. I gotta just keep it rolling. As long as I’m winning football games, I’ll keep the superstition going,” he joked.

NFL News & Rumors: Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs Updates

While some may be repulsed by this ritual, no one can argue with the results. At the age of 28, he is already a two-time Super Bowl champion and has won two regular season and Super Bowl MVP awards. With his Chiefs holding the best record in the AFC at 7-2, he is considered by many to be the frontrunner for this season’s MVP award.

The one thing working against Mahomes right now is the fact that his team doesn’t quite have the collection of weapons it used to. Tyreek Hill is long gone, and he has seemingly only gotten better since being traded to the Miami Dolphins prior to last season. JuJu Smith-Schuster was Kansas City’s most productive wide receiver in 2022, but he left in free agency last offseason to join the New England Patriots.

Not even Mahomes’ lucky underwear can magically solve that issue, but perhaps Mahomes’ magical arm and skills can overcome it this winter come playoff time.
