The Kansas City Chiefs have been one team in the market to acquire some wide receiver help ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Over the last couple of weeks, they have been connected to receivers like Elijah Moore and Kadarius Toney. Now, they have officially pulled the trigger with the New York Giants to acquire Toney.
Adding another weapon for Patrick Mahomes certainly wasn’t a “necessity,” as the team’s offense has still been firing on all cylinders. However, taking a flier on Toney makes a ton of sense for a conditional third-round pick.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter originally announced the news of the trade between the Chiefs and Giants.
Toney was drafted with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He put together a decent rookie season, catching 39 passes for 420 yards, but did not score a single touchdown. This season in just two games, he has two receptions for zero yards.
It’s clear that things were not going to work out between the Giants and Toney. Being able to unload him for a conditional third-round pick is a huge win for New York. For the Chiefs, they are getting a speedy wideout who could unlock his full potential playing with a quarterback like Mahomes.
At just 23 years of age, it will be interesting to see what kind of role Kadarius Toney can carve out in Kansas City. The Chiefs already have JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Mecole Hardman, and Skyy Moore on the roster. However, they are obviously acquiring Toney with a reason.
Expect to see Toney get a chance to show what he’s capable of this season moving forward. This trade could end up going down as a big win-win for both the Chiefs and Giants.
