Could the Cincinnati Bengals make a push for Washington Commanders edge rusher Chase Young ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline? Gilbert Manzano of Sports Illustrated would like to see it.

Manzano notes that while Bengals have logged a solid 19 sacks through their first six games this season, but they don’t really have one dominant pass rusher.

The Commanders are apparently fielding calls for Young after declining to pick up his fifth-year option. Young will hit free agency at the end of the season, and Washington does not seem too keen on retaining him after a disappointing run with the cub.

Young, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by the Commanders with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He enjoyed a very impressive rookie campaign, registering 44 tackles and 7.5 sacks en route to a Pro Bowl appearance. However, it has been a rough ride for Young ever since.

The 24-year-old tore his ACL nine games into 2021, and before the injury, he had been very unproductive with just 1.5 sacks.

Young’s recovery time as well as other injury issues then limited him to just three games in 2022, where he failed to register a sack. He then missed the 2023 season opener due to a stinger, but he returned in Week 2 and has actually had a bit of a resurgence.

Through six games, Young has totaled 14 tackles and five sacks and has once again made himself attractive to teams looking to improve their pass rush.

Young may not even cost a Day 1 pick due to his injury history and his inconsistency, so a club like the Bengals may be able to snag on a medium-risk, high-reward deal.

Cincinnati is 3-3 and sits one-and-a-half games behind the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North. The Bengals will take on the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday.
