Clemson Tigers: Exclusive interview with 2021 4-star QB Bubba Chandler

The Clemson Tigers have been one of college football’s elite programs for quite some time now and seem to be a contender each and every year to make a run at the National Championship. A big part of their recent success has had to do with quarterback play.

As most fans will know, Trevor Lawrence is heading into the 2020 season as a Heisman Trophy front-runner. However, he will be leaving Clemson for the NFL more than likely following the year. The future for the Tigers at quarterback may be a bit cloudy.

Enter Bubba Chandler, a four-star quarterback out of North Oconee High School in Bogart, Georgia. If you’re not familiar with you, you might want to get familiar with him. He has committed to play football at Clemson and chose the school despite offers from other big programs like Miami, Louisville, and Ole Miss.

Standing in at 6-foot-3 and just over 190 pounds, Chandler has big-time potential. He could very well become the next big thing at quarterback for the Tigers.

Our own Evan Massey had the chance to interview Chandler about his commitment to Clemson, what he will bring to the field for the Tigers, and a closer look for fans who may not know a ton about him.

Starting off, we wanted to ask Chandler what his reasons for committing to Clemson were and he had a fantastic answer.

“It’s top-notch everything up there. The coaches, the players, facilities, fans, etc. It’s always been a dream of mine to play for Coach Swinney. I said when I was a freshman in high school the only way I would go play football somewhere in college, was if it was for Clemson University. I feel like I can grow and develop there not only as a football and baseball player, but as a man. To set myself up for success after sports.”

Next up, there are a lot of fans reading this article who have probably never seen Chandler play. He was happy to detail what he will bring to the field.

“I’m just an athlete. I have no fear of anything so I’ll always be giving my best to score touchdowns and put my teammates in the best situations to score. I personally believe I have the strongest arm in my class and you can see it on film. I have determined myself to get faster in the offseason and I’ve done that. Now running in the low 4.5’s in the 40. I make stuff happen whether it’s with the legs or the arm.”

We also like to hear who players are away from the game. Chandler broke down a bit more of who he is when he isn’t playing football.

“I’m a fun dude. I love playing golf and hanging with my boys. I’m a big hunter and fisherman. Whenever I can get away from life I always enjoy going to the woods and enjoying Gods creation. I’m also a big basketball player. Any pickup game or whatever I’m always going to be there dunking. Just ask David Pollack.”

Chandler is still a very young player, but he is not scared to list his biggest strengths and weaknesses at this point in his career.

“Well I’ve never had a quarterback coach. So probably my footwork. It’s getting better, a lot better though. I’ve always had a good metal game as far as staying cool and collected. Also a football mind. With learning the offense and knowing the defense. Then continuing to get stronger. I’ve put on weight and a lot of muscle over the past months, which I can see translate on the field and in my arm.”

Fans always love to hear about comparisons for incoming talent and they will love the current quarterback that Chandler would compare his game to.

“Trevor Lawrence. Because he’s presumed as a passing QB but can run just as good as any running QB in the country. So I compare myself to him in that way. Also he can make every throw at anytime. Whether it’s on the run or in the pocket.”

Clemson also has a ton of other talent coming in through the 2021 recruiting class. We asked Chandler about the class and who he thinks fans should have their eyes on.

“Hands down best of all the classes. The amount of just straight ballers that Coach Swinney and his staff has put together is crazy, and we aren’t done yet! All of them will make an impact as soon as we get there. I feel like Will and Phil are two running backs who are going to be the next Sony Michel and Nick Chubb.”

For fans wondering what to expect from Chandler when he arrives on campus, we have you covered with that answer from the man himself.

“That I’m going to compete for a starting job in both sports as soon as I get there. If I do win the starting job, I will give the fans all they want along with the help of my teammates grinding every day to achieve our goals.”

Speaking of goals, we wanted to ask Chandler what early goals he has already set for himself for his career at Clemson.

“Team of course continue to win the ACC championship and putting ourselves in the position for the National Championship. Individual goal is just to win the job and put myself in a position to reach my goal.”

Finally, in closing, Chandler made a very bold and exciting statement for the Clemson fan base.

“Bubba Chandler will win a Natty for Clemson University.”
