Eric Metcalf, a revered figure in Cleveland Browns history, has emerged as a vocal opponent of the NFL’s controversial hip-drop tackle technique.

In a recent statement relayed via Bally Sports Cleveland on Twitter, the 56-year-old NFL veteran expressed his support for banning this contentious move.

“When we’re talking about this hip-drop (tackle), you’re injuring people.”

Metcalf boasts an extensive football career, having represented seven different teams across three decades. Although primarily known for his prowess as a return specialist during his impressive 13-year tenure, Metcalf is now turning heads with his stance on defensive tactics.

Addressing the issue, Metcalf highlighted a critical point: many defensive players fail to grasp the significance of the hip-drop tackle due to their limited experience on the offensive side of the ball.

Despite resistance from some within the defensive ranks, who perceive the ban as a departure from traditional tackle football towards a more sanitized version akin to flag football, Metcalf remains steadfast in his conviction that the NFL’s decision is justified.

The pivotal moment came during the NFL meetings held in March, where owners overwhelmingly voted to outlaw the hip-drop tackle, citing player safety concerns. This technique, characterized by a tackle around the waist or hip with the defender’s weight pulling down the opponent, resulted in numerous injuries and sidelined several athletes during the 2023 season.

In tandem with the ban, the NFL also introduced modifications to kickoff procedures, strategically positioning defenders closer to returners to encourage more returns while mitigating the risk of collisions. Analysts speculate that these changes, coupled with the prohibition of the hip-drop tackle, could potentially enhance offensive output on the field.

Metcalf’s legacy extends beyond his advocacy efforts; during his six-year tenure with the Browns from 1989 to 1994, he left an indelible mark on the game. Accumulating an impressive 541 receptions for 5,572 yards and 31 touchdowns, Metcalf’s versatility shone through as he also contributed 2,392 rushing yards and 12 scores during his illustrious professional career.
