1. Quarterback Change
The most important position on a football field is the quarterback and the Colts took a big step back going from Luck to Brissett. In 2020, they take a step forward going from Brissett to Philip Rivers. The long time San Diego-Los Angeles Charger agreed to a one-year, $25 million contract with the Colts.
The Chargers are rebuilding and they made that clear when they selected Justin Herbert with the sixth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Indianapolis feels that they are a win now team and Rivers can help immediately. Rivers will reunite with Reich and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni, who both spent time as part of the Chargers’ staff during Rivers’ tenure.
In Indy, Rivers will have the luxury of being protected by one of the top offensive lines in football. Ryan Kelly has been the anchor at center while Quenton Nelson and Anthony Castonzo are two of the best at their position in the league. The Colts have added some strong skill position players giving Rivers more weapons to work with.
The 2020 season will have a lot to do with the production of Rivers. If the veteran has a strong season, it is hard to imagine that the Colts will miss the playoffs. This could also earn him another contract. Rivers will play this season with a chip on his shoulder and that is good news for the Colts. This quarterback change is the biggest improvement and will be the deciding factor on whether or not the team is successful.
