The Indianapolis Colts made their first big move of the offseason when they agreed to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders. Quarterback is now their biggest need of the offseason, as they likely want to bring a veteran in, not rely on Jacob Eason as the starter.
While filling the hole at quarterback will be their No. 1 priority, there are other needs on the roster. One of the biggest needs could be at the tight end position.
Mo Alie-Cox appeared in all 17 games of the 2021 season, catching 24 passes for 316 yards and four touchdowns but is a free agent. Jack Doyle, who was ahead of him on the pecking order and appeared in all 17 games himself, announced his retirement this offseason.
Doyle pulled in 29 receptions of his own for 302 yards and three touchdowns. That is a good chunk of production that could be missing from the roster in 2022 and the Colts will have to address it.
Unfortunately for them, and any team that was looking to add a tight end this offseason, it could be slim pickings. Three tight ends in David Njoku, Dalton Schultz and Mike Gesicki have been franchise tagged by their respective teams in the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins.
But, there is one target that could be emerging for the Colts. According to Mike Garafolo during an appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” on Friday, Indianapolis has its sights set on former New York Giants tight end, Evan Engram.
There isn’t much to the report, but Engram would be a good target for the Colts. He entered the league with great potential as a difference-maker at the position with his athleticism. While he failed to fully live up to the billing of a first-round pick, there is enough intrigue there for teams to bite.
The Colts need explosiveness on their offense and Engram could provide that. He isn’t the best blocker, but if they can scheme him some targets each week, he could make an impact. The Giants’ coaching staff never seemed to be able to find a way to utilize their explosive weapons and Engram fell victim to that.
A one-year flier on someone with the size and speed combo that Engram possesses is a worthwhile game for any team to take.
