Commanders Connected To Two OL Prospects At No. 16 In 2023 NFL Draft

The Washington Commanders are coming into the 2023 NFL Draft with a few clear needs on their roster. Many people would consider quarterback their biggest one, but the franchise is committed to Sam Howell as the starter in 2023, so they likely won’t be looking in that direction.

Likely atop their to-do list is finding some help in the trenches on the offensive line. For how deep and talented the defensive line is, the offensive line is the opposite. Premium draft capital hasn’t been committed to there, which has led to some needs popping up.

With the No. 16 overall pick, Washington could be calling the name of an offensive lineman. The interior and tackle spots could both use some help, but right in the middle of the first round, a tackle would likely be in the mix.

Two players to keep an eye on are Broderick Jones out of Georgia and Darnell Wright out of Tennessee. With Andrew Wylie set to take over at right tackle, joining the Commanders from the Kansas City Chiefs along with Eric Bieniemy, the SEC behemoths could both provide some competition for Charles Leno at the left tackle spot.

Finding success in such a loaded conference is not easy, but Jones and Wright were both able to do it. Jones has eye-popping athleticism for an offensive tackle, something that will draw teams to him. But, he remains a raw prospect.

He has started only 19 games for the Bulldogs, so his technique could use some refinement. The outlook is certainly positive for him, as he should develop into a multi-year starting tackle in the NFL. Should a team need help elsewhere along the line he can certainly chip in, but tackle is where he will end up.

Wright also possesses an intriguing blend of size, speed and athleticism. He comes with a ton of experience and a high-level performance at both left and right tackle, which will only help him at the next level.

It could take him a little longer to be a bonafide starter at left tackle than Jones, but the tools are there for Wright to succeed in the early going. He is a mauler in the run game and possesses excellent strength, patience and technique to succeed as a pass protector.
