The Washington Commanders are going to be in the market once again for a quarterback in 2023. The Carson Wentz experiment looks like it is going to last only one season as he once again failed to elevate his team near the end of the season when they needed him most.

Wentz started hot in the first two games of the season, throwing for seven touchdowns as the team scored 57. In his next four starts, he threw for only three touchdowns and the team scored 48 total points.

He suffered a broken finger on his hand which thrust Taylor Heinicke into the starting lineup until Week 17 when Wentz was healthy enough to get back into the lineup. With their season on the line, Wentz had a dud of a game against the Cleveland Browns, officially eliminating the Commanders from the postseason.

There has been a lot of chatter about who would be the team’s next starting quarterback as early indications are that it will be Sam Howell. Howell was a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of North Carolina and was the team’s starter in their season finale against the Dallas Cowboys, picking up a win.

But, is there a chance that they aim a little bit higher? Former NFL head coach and current ESPN analyst Rex Ryan had a wild theory about the direction that the Commanders could go in. With new ownership on the way, he believes Tom Brady and Sean Payton could team up together in the nation’s capital.

That would be quite a splash for Washington to make, bringing in Brady and Payton together. While it seems like a far-fetched idea, there is some merit to it. There were some discussions about the two teaming up on the Miami Dolphins, which is part of why the team was docked their first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft because of tampering.

There has been no indication that head coach Ron Rivera’s job is in jeopardy, but if the opportunity to land Brady and Payton presented itself, it is one that the Commanders’ brain trust would think long and hard about making.
