Commanders Predicted To Acquire Carson Wentz In Offseason

The Washington Commanders are one of the teams that will be in the market for a new quarterback this offseason. They made a half-hearted attempt to fix their issues under center bringing in Ryan Fitzpatrick last offseason, but that move didn’t pan out.

Fitzpatrick didn’t even make it through Week 1, as he suffered a hip injury in the first half of the game and we didn’t see him on the field again. With him sidelined, the team turned to Taylor Heinicke as the starting quarterback.

While Heinicke has made some nice plays as a starter for Washington, they have not occurred often enough. He has been inconsistent and is likely best as a high-end backup than starting option.

With that in mind, the team needs to find another option to turn to this offseason. While they would love to land an established player such as Aaron Rodgers or Deshaun Watson, that may not be in the cards for Washington.

Even an incremental improvement at the position could get the team on track, as long as the defense turns things around in 2022. This is an offense with the pieces in place to have a successful unit with improved play under center.

The Commanders have a strong offensive line, good running game and legitimate No. 1 receiver to get the ball to. This is an environment any quarterback would like to land in. Could they end up with a semi-familiar face on Carson Wentz? Over at Yardbarker, one of their bold predictions for the NFL offseason was that Wentz will end up with the Commanders.

Washington spent years trying to game plan against Wentz while he was the starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent the 2021 season with the Indianapolis Colts, but things didn’t pan out as well as they had hoped as Wentz came up short when the team needed him most.

Wentz got ridiculed for his performance at times, and rightfully so. How he played in Week 18 against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a playoff spot on the lineup was unacceptable. However, when looking at stats, he is a sizable upgrade over Heinicke.

Wentz finished ninth in the NFL in QBR and 13th in passer rating, while Heinicke was 23rd and 25th. Heinicke also turned the ball over more than twice as much as Wentz, throwing 15 interceptions compared to seven for Wentz. In advanced stats, Wentz was better than Heinicke nearly across the board as well.

While Wentz wouldn’t be the move that gets people the most excited, it would certainly present an improvement for Washington. He would likely be motivated knowing he has the chance to play against his old team in the Eagles twice a year as well.

At only 29-years old, Wentz could be the starting quarterback for years to come in Washington if things go well in 2022.
