Could Colts Make Bold QB Change In 2022 NFL Offseason?

The Indianapolis Colts’ season came to an abrupt end on Sunday afternoon. The only thing standing between the Colts and a spot in the postseason was the 2-14 Jacksonville Jaguars. All the Colts had to do was win the game and they would clinch a spot.

Well, the Colts ended up losing the game and in pretty embarrassing fashion. The Jaguars took their division rivals to the woodshed, winning 26-11. Even better for Jacksonville, they held onto the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft because the Detroit Lions also won, defeating the Green Bay Packers.

The Colts had not won a game in Duval County since 2014, so a loss on the road against the Jaguars isn’t anything new for the Colts. However, given the circumstances this time around, the result is a shocking one. Indianapolis entered the game as 16-point favorites yet never led in the game. The Jaguars led for more time in that game than they had the rest of the season combined.

The performance of quarterback Carson Wentz is one that was under the microscope, as he was pitiful against the Jaguars. He had his worst performance of the season for the Colts, registering a QBR of 4.4. To put that into perspective, QBR is on a scale of 100 and 50 is average.

This is a strong roster, but they were ultimately unable to overcome the inconsistent production of Wentz under center. The quarterback position in Indianapolis will be something that people keep an eye on, as head coach Frank Reich was non-committal on Wentz’s future with the team.

“As far as Carson (Wentz), again I mentioned this the other day just with individuals, we loved the team we had this year. We knew everyone we brought in this year we expected to play winning football. Next year’s roster will be next year’s roster,” Reich told reporters Monday. “I’m not going to evaluate or talk about any – I don’t want to just open it up with one player and then start talking about all of them.”

Well, that certainly isn’t a glowing review for Wentz heading into the offseason. Reich isn’t going to divulge many details, but if the team was more confident in him, it is likely a more concrete answer about his future would have been presented.

Wentz is signed through the 2024 season, but it would not be surprising if the team goes in a different direction at the position for the 2022 season. The Colts have a very strong roster and if they can upgrade the quarterback position, they will have to think long and hard about it.
