Could The Rams Actually Pull Off Trade For Jonathan Taylor?

There was a lot that went wrong for the Los Angeles Rams during the 2022 season. The defending Super Bowl champions never found their footing, which led to a dreadful 5-12 campaign.

Injuries were a big reason for their lack of success. They lost multiple key players and without great depth, the losses began piling up on the field. There is a cost to every move a team makes and for the Rams, winning a Super Bowl has left them struggling to fill out the roster with high-end talent.

Already committed to their veteran core, ownership could look to make more splashes this offseason. There have been some rumors that the Rams could look to trade a player such as Jalen Ramsey to not only free up cap space but bring back some draft capital the team lacks.

Or, the Rams could double down on this strategy and look to strengthen the weaknesses on the roster by trading more draft capital. It would certainly be risky, but this is a team that with better health and a few breaks going their way could be back in the playoff picture in 2023.

One area that the team needs to address is its backfield. Los Angeles’ run game was anemic in 2022, ranking 27th in yards gained. Offensive line woes certainly attributed to that, but finding an upgrade in the backfield certainly isn’t outside the realm of possibilities.

Never afraid to make a splash acquisition, could Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts be a realistic target for the Rams? That deal is one that Marcus Mosher of PFF would certainly love to see this offseason.

“So what about a Taylor trade? Taylor is entering the final year of his contract, so the Indianapolis Colts might want to avoid making him the league’s highest-paid running back, as they are set to begin a rebuild. Could the Rams flip the No. 37 pick in this year’s draft, along with some other filler picks, to get the best pure running back in the league?”

That would certainly bolster what was a shaky Rams offense. Finding balance on the ground would help make things run much smoother, taking pressure off of Matthew Stafford. Taylor has shown he can get the job done and as an improving pass catcher is turning into a true three-down back.

Sacrificing even more draft capital would be seen as a bad move by some, but head coach Sean McVay and the veterans aren’t coming back to jumpstart a rebuild. They want to be competitive and acquiring Taylor to turn the running game around would certainly achieve that.
