Could The Stefon Diggs Trade Backfire For Houston Texans?

The Houston Texans landed wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday, sending a 2025 second-round pick to the Bills in exchange for him.

While most seem to be lauding the trade, citing that the Texans really didn’t give up that much to land a receiver who has made four straight Pro Bowls, there are some concerns here.

Yes, Houston’s receiving corps is now loaded, as it features Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Not only that, but the Texans have Dalton Schultz at tight end, and new running back Joe Mixon is a terrific pass-catcher out of the backfield.

Second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud will have no shortage of weapons. That’s for sure.

But could that end up becoming a problem?

While Diggs is supremely talented, we know that his attitude is a question mark. He caused issues with the Minnesota Vikings. He ruffled feathers with the Bills. What makes us think he won’t do the same thing in Houston, especially if he isn’t getting the touches he desires?

Stroud enjoyed a historic rookie campaign in 2023 throwing to Collins and Dell, the latter of whom missed the second half of the season due to injury. He became very comfortable throwing to those two wide outs, not to mention Schultz.

Essentially, Diggs is almost surely not going to be catching 100 passes with the Texans like he did in Buffalo each of the last four years. Will he be okay with that?

Heck, Diggs may not even end up being Stroud’s No. 1 guy. After all, Collins actually registered more receiving yards (1,297) than Diggs (1,183) this past season.

Let’s say Stroud favors Collins (and maybe even Dell) early on. Does Diggs start sounding off? Will he throw passive-aggressive shots at Stroud during interviews? Will he make cryptic social media posts expressing his frustrations?

So many fans and media pundits seem to be expecting big things from the Texans now that they have acquired Diggs, and on paper, you can understand why.

But the thing is, Houston was going to be very good even before it added Diggs. It already had Stroud. It already had a pair of terrific receivers. It added superstar edge rusher Danielle Hunter to put alongside of Will Anderson Jr., giving the Texans a lethal pass rush.

The Texans won the AFC South in 2023, and even before swinging a deal for Diggs, they were the favorites to repeat as division champions in 2024.

Bringing Diggs into the fold could certainly make them better if Diggs behaves himself and if Stroud is able to develop an early connection with him. But if not? The Texans could implode.

Suddenly, there is a lot of pressure on Stroud to deliver. This past year, there was little to no pressure on him. There were no expectations. Houston went 2-15 the season prior. If Stroud led the Texans to six or seven wins, it would have been a successful rookie campaign.

But instead, Stroud pushed Houston to 10 victories and also led the Texans to a romp over the Cleveland Browns in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

Now, Stroud is on everybody’s radar. He is expected to take a step forward in his sophomore season. And now that he has Diggs in addition to all of the other offensive talent that already existed on the Texans’ roster, the anticipation has grown.

It will be interesting to monitor the dynamic between Stroud and Diggs over the first couple of months of next season. If Houston has some struggles and there are a couple of instances where Stroud misses an open Diggs or if Diggs simply isn’t getting what he feels are enough targets, issues could arise.

Again, the Texans look great on paper. They look like they could even rival the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens in the AFC. But the game isn’t played on paper.

Stefon Diggs found that out in Buffalo. He may also discover that in Houston.
