Cowboys: 3 burning questions surrounding the Dallas defense in 2020

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Can Aldon Smith become a key contributor for the defense?

Once upon a time, Aldon Smith appeared to be headed toward stardom as he got off to a fast start in his career with the San Francisco 49ers. In his first two seasons in the NFL in 2011-2012, Smith accumulated 33.5 sacks, 56 quarterback hits, and five forced fumbles.

Sadly, the former first-round pick would struggle with drug and substance abuse in his career, causing him to be suspended indefinitely by the NFL in 2015. After four seasons away from the NFL, Smith inked a one-year, prove-it deal with the Cowboys this offseason. Above all, he was reinstated by the NFL, allowing him to suit up for Dallas next season.

Upon the departure of Quinn in free agency, the Cowboys are going to need someone to replace the 11.5 sacks that he contributed in his lone season with the team. Even though he’s been out of football for a few years, can Smith become a key contributor for the defense?
