Usually a punter will not be featured on a list like this. For a team like the Cowboys, it is newsworthy when they look to release a punter.

Dallas has trotted out just two punters since 2004. Mat McBriar joined the team in 2004 and would handle the punting duties until Jones took over in 2013. Over the last two years, Chris Jones’ numbers have gone down. He finished 34th in the NFL in net average during the 2019 season. This is the main reason why Dallas might opt to release their veteran punter.

Jones has two years remaining on his contract. In 2020, he would count $2.4 million against the salary cap. He is not close to being the highest-paid punter in the league, but many can be signed for the league minimum. Dallas would get $1.4 million in cap relief if they decide to cut Jones prior to camp.

This would not be a big time impact decision but it is worth noting that Jones has been tenured with the Cowboys since 2011.
