No. 5: Jason Garrett on the Hot Seat
Look around, and it’s not hard to find reports and suggestions head coach Jason Garrett is on the hot seat. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has gone on the record saying this isn’t the case, but if Dallas fails to reach the playoffs this season, one can’t help but fathom the idea of Jones’ patience running out.
Garrett and Dak Prescott are going to be hard pressed to find viable options through the air (more on that later). So rather than trying to experiment with unknown options and commodities, why not rely on the best one available?
It’s the NFL equivalent of betting on the best horse in the race or, in terms of Xs and Os, putting the responsibility on the shoulders of your biggest playmaker. Ezekiel Elliott is that for Dallas, no question. If you were to take a look at the Cowboys’ depth chart and try to identify the team’s primary big-name offensive weapons aside from Elliott and Dak Prescott, you’d be left with some question marks.
Simply put, Garrett isn’t going to gamble his future in Dallas on some less-known commodities this season. No, he’ll want to put his chips in the proverbial “Elliott basket,” if you will, banking on his top offensive weapon to replicate the kind of efforts he flashed back in 2016.
That leads to the next point, the lack of a supporting cast.
