Cowboys Acquire Zach Ertz From Cardinals In Bold Trade Proposal

Zach Ertz, Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the few teams in the NFC that many people consider legitimate contenders. While they haven’t advanced beyond the divisional round in nearly 30 years, this looks like a team poised to snap that streak.

The Cowboys weren’t big players in free agency this offseason as they didn’t have money to spend. But, they were able to fill the voids on their roster as they were very active in the trade market. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore and wide receiver Brandin Cooks both fill major needs.

As they prepare for the regular season, there aren’t any glaring holes on the roster. Sure, the depth at a few positions could be improved, but the Cowboys, from top-to-bottom, have a very strong group.

One of the positions that it wouldn’t hurt to add some reinforcements is the tight end. Dalton Schultz departed in free agency, signing with the Houston Texans. That leaves a sizable void in the lineup as Dallas will be relying on Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot and rookie second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker to replace him.

That is a lot of inexperience to be relying on at an important position in the offense. There aren’t many quarterbacks in the NFL that involve their tight as much as Dak Prescott does. Going out and adding a veteran to the mix would be a good idea for Jerry Jones.

One player who could pique their interest is Zach Ertz of the Arizona Cardinals. Ertz was a player suggested by Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report for Arizona trade to trade before the 2023 season.

It would be hard to argue against that given the current state of the franchise. This is a clear rebuild, one that has resulted in plenty of veterans being moved already this offseason. The Cardinals traded offensive lineman Josh Jones and linebacker Isaiah Simmons for pennies on the dollar this week.

Ertz doesn’t fit their timeline and would likely prefer a change of scenery. Landing with the Cowboys would be a best-case scenario. Dallas could offer a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to get a deal done.

Going from arguably the worst team in the NFL to a playoff contender would be ideal for the 32-year-old Ertz. He would help replace the safety net that Schultz provided and be a mentor to the young tight end group that has been put together in Dallas.
