Cowboys’ Aldon Smith is set to be major X-Factor for defense in 2020

The Dallas Cowboys are in full training camp mode as their prepare for the upcoming 2020 NFL season. After a very strange offseason due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cowboys are looking like a team that could compete for a Super bowl. Aldon Smith was a very underrated signing in free agency and is already making some noise for his new team.

Smith, who has had a very rocky NFL career due to multiple off-the-field issues, is hoping to find a home that fits him. He has learned from his mistakes and appears to be trying to make the most of this new opportunity.

Throughout his five-year NFL career and 59 career games played, Smith has been a lethal passer and playmaker. He has racked up 180 total tackles to go along with 47.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, and eight defended passes. Not bad numbers for a late free agency low-risk signing.

New head coach Mike McCarthy opened up a bit about Smith and what he has seen from the new defensive threat so far in training camp. It all sounds very good for the Cowboys.

“If you walked away from practice, you would say, ‘Hey, who the hell is No. 58?’ You can see his power, his length is extraordinary. …I’m very happy with where Aldon is right now.”

Standing in at 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, Smith is an intimidating presence on the edge. The Cowboys needed more pass-rushing and Smith could very well end up being that guy for them.

After last playing in 2015 with the Oakland Raiders, Smith understands that this could very well be his last chance in the NFL. Playing for a franchise like the Cowboys is a dream come true. He can compete for a championship and get his career back on track.

McCarthy and the Cowboys have a high-powered offense that should be very fun to watch. With Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and CeeDee Lamb, they are set. The defense will decide where the Cowboys end up.

Aldon Smith may not be viewed as a key player defensively, but if he can continue performing the way he has thus far, that will change.
