The Dallas Cowboys are going to have some difficult decisions to make when it comes to cutting the roster down to 53 players next Tuesday. They are deep at multiple positions, one of which is the defensive front.
Dallas has stockpiled quite an impressive stable of pass rushers. That group has only gotten stronger with the addition of Micah Parsons, the do-it-all linebacker who is transitioning into a pass-rushing role full-time.
Jerry Jones will now have his hands full when figuring out who to keep along the defensive line. In recent weeks, they have been mentioned as a team that will look to make some trades in the coming days instead of just releasing players with value.
Dorance Armstrong Jr. has been mentioned as a trade candidate as he is heading into the final season of his contract. Alas, some players will have to be released. In the opinion of Seth Trachtman of Yardbarker, veteran pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr. could be a surprise cut candidate.
“Fowlers performed relatively well as a pass-rushing specialist for Dallas last season with six sacks, though his contribution was very limited, seeing only 30% of defensive snaps. The third overall draft choice in 2015, Fowler will need to continue producing to keep his roster spot.”
Fowler, who was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars, never quite lived up to the lofty expectations that come with being selected so high. But, he has done a pretty good job of carving out a role for himself in recent seasons.
He has proven that he can produce even when not playing a full-time role. The Florida product would likely be in line for a similar role during the upcoming season should he make the 53-man roster.
It would certainly be a surprise to see the Cowboys release him, but there is going to be a solid player released by the team from the edge rushing group as they cannot keep everyone. If the team opts to develop some of their younger players, Fowler is someone who could be on the chopping block.
