Cowboys rumored to be Jamal Adams’ preferred landing spot

Last week, New York Jets All-Pro safety Jamal Adams formally requested a trade from the team. Hours after this news broke, ESPN’s Adam Schefter released a list of Adams’ preferred destinations if and when the Jets trade him. Among those teams is the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys are a team who could sorely use a safety with the skill set Adams brings to the table. Although the team already acquired Ha Ha Clinton-Dix this offseason, there’s no question Adams is the superior safety.

Inserting Adams into this Dallas secondary could make their defensive unit one of the best in the league.

Some sources close to Adams have stated that the Cowboys are atop his wishlist of trade destinations, and the safety himself added some validity to those claims over the weekend.

In a video posted all over social media, Adams gets asked if he’s coming to Dallas by presumably a Cowboys fan. He responds with, “I’m trying, bro!”

There’s no doubt Dallas would love to have this guy roaming around their secondary, but a trade is easier said than done. First off, the Jets haven’t even granted Adams permission to seek a trade yet, which will be the first step in any trade actually getting done.

Secondly, the whole reason Adams wants out of New York is because they’re refusing to pay him. With his rookie deal expiring after the 2021 season, he’s looking to get paid like one of the best safeties in football, meaning he’ll make an annual salary of about $15 – $20 million.

The Cowboys only have about $11 million in cap space remaining this offseason. They also just signed quarterback Dak Prescott to the exclusive franchise tag over the weekend, so he’ll count for $31.4 million. Getting a long-term deal done with Dak would lower his cap hit for this season, but a long-term deal still feels like a ways off for Dak and the Cowboys.

We’re still in the infant stages of these Jamal Adams trade rumors, but we’re bound to hear more news on it as we get closer to the start of the season.
