Cowboys Sign Veteran DB After Awful Injury News

The Dallas Cowboys have made a free agent signing, but not for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. That pursuit is still ongoing but was put on hold as the team had more pressing issues that needed to be addressed.

With the depth at cornerback being dangerously thin, the Cowboys have decided to sign veteran cornerback Mackensie Alexander to the practice squad. It shouldn’t be long before he is elevated to the 53-man roster as Dallas is hurting for bodies in the secondary.

Slot cornerback Jourdan Lewis was lost for the season on October 23rd with a foot injury. The Cowboys have been able to overcome that, but an injury to Anthony Brown, who was diagnosed with a torn Achilles, put them in a precarious spot.

Brown has been playing well opposite star Trevon Diggs, leaving a sizable void in the Cowboys’ lineup. Experience is certainly an issue as the three players currently on the depth chart behind Diggs have all been drafted since last year.

Kelvin Joseph, who surrendered a touchdown to rookie wide receiver Alec Pierce on Sunday in relief of Brown, was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Nahshon Wright was a third-round selection that year. DaRon Bland was a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

That is what makes the signing of Alexander such an important one. He provides the team with some much-needed experience at 29 years old as a second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Alexander has played five seasons in his career with the Minnesota Vikings and one with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was signed by the Miami Dolphins earlier this year but underwent surgery on his groin over the summer and reached an injury settlement with the Dolphins on August 23rd.

In his career, Alexander has three interceptions with 32 passes defended. He has also added 4.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits and 201 combined tackles. It shouldn’t be long before he is added to the active roster as the Cowboys only have four healthy players at the position and Kendall Sheffield is also on the practice squad.
