The Dallas Cowboys began their 2023 off-season preparations much earlier than they were hoping to. For the seventh consecutive time, Dallas was defeated in the Divisional Round, this time losing to the San Francisco 49ers.
The loss has led to some big changes already being made by the team. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was relieved of his duties as the play calling on that side of the ball will now be done by head coach Mike McCarthy.
It was certainly a peculiar decision as Moore is one of the most highly regarded young offensive minds in the game. He was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers before he could even pack his bags to leave Dallas.
Without Moore in the fold, the Cowboys’ offense could look drastically different in 2023. He has been the offensive coordinator since 2019 and the team has found plenty of success with him calling the shots. Personnel-wise, the franchise is also hoping to see some changes made.
According to JPA on Twitter, the Cowboys are still interested in signing veteran free agent Odell Beckham Jr. EVP Stephen Jones said the team is going to resume talks with Beckham after he missed the entire 2022 campaign recovering from ACL surgery.
The Cowboys could certainly use another weapon in their passing game. CeeDee Lamb showed that he is capable of handling the job as the No. 1 guy but the production behind him was lacking.
Michael Gallup was recovering from an ACL injury of his own and looked like he needed some more time to knock off the rust and get back into the swing of things. Beyond him on the depth chart, Noah Brown was the only other receiver to make an impact this season.
With tight end Dalton Schultz also hitting free agency, the Cowboys could have a void in their pecking order for targets. If healthy, Beckham would provide the team with a nice upgrade to their passing game as a complementary target behind Lamb.
