Cowboys Targeting Two Intriguing Names In 2023 NFL Draft

The Dallas Cowboys have done a solid job of filling holes on the roster this offseason. They had a few needs on both sides that have been filled with shrewd trade acquisitions. First, Dallas acquired cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts and then followed it up by landing wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans.

Heading into the 2023 NFL Draft, the Cowboys are in solid shape. They have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball and their biggest goal should be adding depth across the roster. However, if there was one position that they will look to address early on it is a tight end.

Last offseason, Dallas placed the franchise tag on tight end Dalton Schultz. This year, they considered doing it again but ultimately placed the tag on running back Tony Pollard. Schultz and his representatives misjudged his market, but he ended up departing anyway, signing with the Texans.

Without Schultz in the mix, Dallas is left with a huge void in their passing offense. Cooks will help overcome that, but he was second on the team in receptions last season. Currently on the roster to step into his place are Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot.

With that little depth, it should be no surprise that the Cowboys have their sights set on a tight end with their first-round pick. According to Jane Slater via Kevin Gray Jr. of 105.3 The Fan, Dalton Kincaid and Michael Mayer are both in play. A surprise name to watch is Sam LaPorta.

Based on recent mock drafts, there is a chance that the Cowboys will have their pick of tight ends. Mayer is the only one that has been mocked in the teens previously, but Kincaid and LaPorta have almost always been available when the Cowboys come on the clock.

All three would be ideal fits in Dallas given the skill sets that they possess. Kincaid had the second most receiving yards for a tight end in the nation last season, while Mayer has been the go-to receiver for Notre Dame for two seasons. Iowa didn’t have an explosive passing offense but has churned out some impressive tight end talent in recent years, making LaPorta an intriguing option.

Schultz was an excellent pass catcher and a very good run blocker as well. Those are some big shoes to fill and the Cowboys could have a rookie attempting to take on that role during the 2023 season.
