Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb will be the ultimate chess piece on offense

The Dallas Cowboys had one of the most productive offenses in the NFL during the 2019 season. They went out and added another dynamic element to the group with the selection of CeeDee Lamb in the 2020 NFL Draft.

It can take rookies time to adjust to the NFL, but Lamb has been thriving in training camp so far. He is going to play a crucial role in the Cowboys’ offense immediately to start his career, large in part due to his versatility.

When talking to Micheal Gehlken of Dallas Morning News, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy emphasized that Lamb has shown the ability to play ‘all three spots at the receiver position’ and also as a punt returner.

The Cowboys may not have necessarily needed to add another wide receiver on paper. However, Lamb will provide a crucial element to the team’s offense in ways they sorely lacked last season, particularly against the NFL’s top defenses.

Against the better defenses in the league, the Cowboys struggled to execute as Amari Cooper played through injuries. There was a lack of sufficient options to turn to for Dak Prescott, resulting in the unit getting bottled up at times.

With Lamb now in the fold, the Cowboys can move him around at different spots on the field to attack how defenses are playing. If a team is trying to neutralize Cooper, it will be quite difficult to overcome having to slow down Lamb and Gallup from a disadvantaged position.

The expectation is that Lamb will start primarily at the slot receiver spot in the Cowboys’ offense. However, they will look to move him out on the boundary throughout games to give the defense different looks.

Lamb’s ability to take the top off a defense as a deep-threat will open up the field for the rest of the unit. When coupled with his quick cuts and big-play ability after the catch in short and intermediate passing situations, he will be able to exploit underneath space, too.

The bottom line is that CeeDee Lamb is the type of talent that can make special things happen. There’s no shortage of options the Dallas Cowboys will have when it comes to involving the rookie wideout.
