Curtis Samuel named a potential trade target for the Packers

The Green Bay Packers are ramping up their training camp schedule as they prepare for the upcoming 2020 NFL season. One major question mark that still faces the team is at the wide receiver position. Interestingly enough, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Curtis Samuel could be the answer.

All offseason long, the Packers were expected to either sign or draft a wide receiver to provide more help for Aaron Rodgers. While the Packers did bring in Devin Funchess in free agency, they chose not to draft a young receiver. Funchess has since opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns surrounding COVID-19.

In a recent article by The Athletic, Samuel was named a potential trade target for the Packers. They believe a fourth-round pick from the Packers would get the deal done.

Obviously, this is not a report, but rather a move that would make sense for the Packers. Green Bay would absolutely improve with this addition.

Samuel may not be a household name, but he is a quality wideout that would fit the Green Bay offense. He could play in the slot, which is exactly the kind of threat that Matt LaFleur and Rodgers need. They haven’t had a quality slot wideout since Randall Cobb.

Last season with the Panthers, Samuel put together a solid season. He caught 54 passes for 627 yards and six touchdowns. Samuel’s time with the Panthers may be over after the team made the move to sign Robby Anderson in free agency.

At just 24 years old, Samuel would be an ideal fit for the Packers. They need speed and they need consistency. Samuel could provide both of those things.

Currently, the Packers have Allen Lazard penciled in as their No. 2 receiver. Samuel would immediately take over that role.

Brian Gutekunst may choose to stand pat and role with the talent the team already has on the depth chart. Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown would be asked to step up in a big way. Should he choose to explore the trade market, Samuel would make sense.

Expect to hear more rumors surrounding the Packers in the coming weeks. With the season right around the corner, pulling a trigger on a trade for a guy like Curtis Samuel might be exactly what Green Bay needs to do.
