The Dangerous Pass Rush
To continue with the importance of trenches, we come to their defensive line. The pass rushing ability these edge rushers bring to the table is fearsome. Last season, we witnessed Demarcus Lawrence’s break out campaign, as he propelled himself into elite territory. Taco Charlton’s rookie year was not spectacular, but he has looked exquisite in camp thus far. The third edge rusher on this team is freshly reinstated, Randy Gregory. The league has known about his exciting talent for years, but it will be the first time we see him for an extended period of time. If he puts it all together, watch out.
Another aspect of this pass rush Cowboys faithful should be excited about is linebacker Jaylon Smith. The Cowboys have already stated that he will get more opportunities to rush the passer, creating one of the best pass rushes in the league. Smith’s versatility is key for his overall value to improve, and that looks like a solid bet. Smith, Gregory, Lawrence, and Charlton has sky-high potential for a pass rushing quartet.
Why This Helps Them Contend
A mainstay in every elite defense in recent years has been a ferocious pass rush. The Denver defense that took down Brady had Von Miller and Derek Wolfe. The Eagles last year had Barnett and Brandon Graham. Jacksonville’s defense dominated with contributions from Calais Campbell and Yanick Ngakoue. It’s no secret: sacking the quarterback wins you games in the NFL. Now, the Dallas Cowboys can return to the top of the league in this category.
